Dr. Robin Higgs
Robin Higgs is a qualified Physician and Surgeon. He graduated MB BS at the
University of London in 1967. He has specialist qualifications in General
Surgery and in Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the Edinburgh College of
Surgeons, of the Australasian College of Surgeons, and of the Australian
Orthopaedic Association. In 1993 Robin was appointed as Associate Professor in
the Faculties of Engineering and Surgery at the University of Sydney where, with
colleagues, he was responsible for the introduction of undergraduate and
postgraduate education in biomedical engineering.
He also has Masters Degrees in Engineering and Laws, and is a Fellow of the
Institution of Engineers of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian College of
Legal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a Member of,
and former Member of Council, of the Academy of Forensic Sciences of Australia,
and an Overseas Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association. Robin is also a
Member of the Australian and of the British Medical Associations. He
has previously held academic appointments at the University of Sydney (Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine), at the University of Technology, Sydney (Faculty of Science)
and at the University of New South Wales (Faculty of Engineering).
Robin has contributed to the advancement of prosthetic design, pioneered the
clinical use of ceramic materials, the uncemented implantation of orthopaedic
devices, and he was the sole designer of a Modular Shoulder Prosthesis used
world wide.
Dr. Higgs started his medical career in London at St Bartholomews
Hospital. He has served in the Royal Army Medical Corp, commanding a parachute
field surgical unit, he served with Commonwealth
forces in Malaya before commencing orthopaedic training in London and Sydney.
Robin has taught and performed surgery in Europe and Asia. He has
demonstrated surgical procedures in seven countries. He has served on the
Scientific Board of the Trustees of the AFOR Foundation in Switzerland. This
Swiss government and industry supported organisation was committed to
International Orthopaedic Research and Education. He has also advised the
Austrian Government and was a member of the Scientific Committee tasked to
evaluate potential Austrian (K-Plus) nano-research centres.
Robin's major orthopaedic appointment was with the Department of Veterans
Affairs at the Concord RGH. Prior to his retirement from Concord RGH he was
Director of Orthopaedic Surgery and Executive Director of Surgery at that
hospital.
Robin has been awarded three post graduate medals.
- The prestigious Pauwel's Medal - awarded by the German Orthopaedic Society
for contributions to World Orthopaedic Research in general and for
contribution to the understanding of the Biomechanics of the Hip Joint in
particular.
- The Marshall Webb Medal for Military Medicine (London University)
- Tow Prize Medal in surgery at the University of NSW.
Dr. Higgs regularly contributes to the scientific literature and to
learned societies. He has published 50 papers, chapters and dissertations, and
he has presented more than 100 papers at National and International scientific
and educational meetings.
